Four Year Old Kindergarten (4K) Frequently Asked Questions

Helping families learn more about our 4K program and enrollment process.

Do I have to be a resident of Holmen in order for my child to attend Four Year Old Kindergarten (4K)?

Only School District of Holmen residents are able to enroll their children in our district. The exception to the residency rule is to apply for Open Enrollment (typically February through April) through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and be approved for Open Enrollment by our district.

Is my child age-eligible for 4K?

To be eligible for 4K, children must be 4 years old on or before September 1 of the school year you plan to enroll them.

4K is designed to be a one-year program; therefore, your child should attend 4K the year prior to entering Kindergarten. If they have attended 4K through another district, we would place the child in Kindergarten.

Can my 5-year-old attend 4K?

We recommend that students attend school with their same-aged peers. If you feel your child is not yet ready for their year of 4K, please contact the Student Services Department at 608.526.6610, ext. 1308 to discuss developmental concerns.

Do you have a 3-year-old preschool program?

Children who qualify for early childhood services may attend once they turn 3 years old, based upon individual needs. The district does not have a general education 3-year-old preschool program.

When does 4K enrollment start for the upcoming school year?

District residents may begin enrolling in February for the following school year. If you are not a resident and applying for Open Enrollment, complete the application on the Wisconsin DPI website. Once approved by the School District of Holmen in May, you may register your child for 4K.

How do I enroll in 4K?

All student enrollment is completed on the School District of Holmen website. You’ll need to provide the following:

  • Verification of Residency (lease/rental agreement or utility bill)
  • Immunization Records
  • Birth Certificate
Is there a cost associated with 4K?

No, there is no cost or registration fee. However, families may be asked to provide certain school supplies or snacks.

Are meals provided in 4K?

We have a designated snack time during both the AM and PM sessions.

Where are 4K classes held?

4K classes are held at each of our four elementary schools:

  • Evergreen Elementary – 510 Long Coulee Rd
  • Sand Lake Elementary – 3600 Sand Lake Rd
  • Prairie View Elementary – 1201 Newport Lane
  • Viking Elementary – 500 E Wall St
How many days per week do children attend 4K?

Students attend 4K five days per week in either a morning or afternoon session. The 4K/EC program also includes Family Outreach and Staff Collaboration days with no school for students.

What are 4K class times?

Evergreen and Viking Elementary Schools
AM: 8:30 a.m. – 11:10 a.m.
PM: 12:50 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Prairie View and Sand Lake Elementary Schools
AM: 8:40 a.m. – 11:20 a.m.
PM: 1:00 p.m. – 3:40 p.m.

Do you provide transportation for 4K students?

Yes. We offer transportation within district boundaries. Open-enrolled families must provide their own transportation unless their child attends a daycare within our boundaries. Transportation determines the session (AM or PM).

We require hand-to-hand transfer for all students for safety. Transportation details are available via Infinite Campus by mid-August. Questions: transp@holmen.k12.wi.us or call 608.526.4752.

Do I have a choice in the session (AM or PM) my child attends?

We do our best to honor requests, but transportation efficiency often determines session placement. Mid-year transportation changes may result in a new session or teacher assignment.

When do we find out which session our children attend?

Families will receive session and teacher information during the Summer Picture Day in August.

When is the first day of school?

The first day of school is typically an Orientation Day for 4K students. Families attend with their child for a scheduled 45-minute block. The following day begins regular 4K classes.
